Our Path to Sustainable Aviation

Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) is committed to building a safe, sustainable, and leading aviation ecosystem in Eurasia. Our sustainability approach integrates environmental performance, operational excellence, strong governance, sustainable investment, and the well-being of our people. We align our work with Azerbaijan’s NDC 3.0, the national Green Taxonomy, and global aviation standards including IATA, ICAO, GRI, SASB, and Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA).

Our ESG Strategy provides a long-term framework for decarbonizing flight operations, modernizing ground and airport infrastructure, strengthening governance and ESG data systems, managing environmental and operational risks, and protecting biodiversity while enhancing climate resilience.

Collaboration and knowledge-sharing are key to this progress. By working with global and regional peers, regulators, industry partners, and financial institutions, AZAL advances sustainable aviation practices, accelerates innovation, and supports stronger regional and international connectivity.

Our ESG Strategy

AZAL’s ESG Strategy sets the pathways for delivering measurable sustainability impact and long-term business value. It brings together operational excellence, strong governance, and data-driven decision-making to support a resilient and future-ready aviation ecosystem.

The Strategy is structured around four key focus areas

Low-carbon
flight operations

Sustainable infrastructure

Responsible governance & investment

Biodiversity & climate resilience

Low-Carbon Flight Operations

This focus area drives our transition to a lower-emission aviation model through fleet modernization, smarter operations, and advanced digital technologies that improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Sustainable Ground & Infrastructure

We are reshaping our airports and ground operations to become cleaner, more efficient, and future-ready, integrating renewable energy, smart airport solutions, and sustainable infrastructure development.

Integrated Governance & Sustainable Investment

Our governance framework ensures accountability and transparency across AZAL. Supported by a system of record for ESG data, it strengthens reporting, improves risk management, enables sustainable finance, and drives innovation through global and regional partnerships.

Biodiversity Conservation & Climate Resilience

This area guides our efforts to protect natural ecosystems, enhance climate resilience across airport environments, and collaborate with scientific and community partners to support long-term environmental stewardship.

Our Pathway to Net/Near Zero Emissions by 2050

AZAL’s Net/Near Zero Emissions (NZE) Roadmap outlines the long-term trajectory for reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our fleet, airport infrastructure, and operational ecosystem. It brings together fleet renewal, cleaner energy sources, operational efficiencies, smart technologies, and future carbon removal solutions—each contributing to a declining emissions profile consistent with global climate objectives.

The general pathway follows a progressive decarbonization curve, where early reductions are driven by improved efficiency and operational enhancements, accelerating over time as next-generation aircraft, clean energy systems, and sustainable aviation fuels become more widely available. Carbon removal plays a long-term balancing role, ensuring alignment with the Paris Agreement and the global aviation sector’s 2050 net-zero ambition.

This roadmap provides a structured direction for planning, investment, and innovation—making decarbonization an integral part of AZAL’s future growth and competitiveness while supporting Azerbaijan’s national climate commitments.

AZAL has joined GAIN (Green Aviation Insights) to accelerate sustainable aviation through data-driven efficiency improvements and collaborative benchmarking in 2024.

United Nations Global Compact Membership

AZAL became a member of the UN Global Compact in January 2024, aligning its operations with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We successfully submitted our Communication on Progress (CoP) as an alternative sustainability report and obtained active membership status, reinforcing our commitment to transparency and responsible business practices.

Voluntary CO₂ Offset Program (First in the Region)

In 2024, AZAL launched the region’s first voluntary passenger CO₂ offset program with CarbonClick, enabling travelers to support certified climate projects during booking. Today, 2% of all online tickets include an offset contribution.

CORSIA Compliance & CO₂ Emissions Reporting

Azerbaijan has been a CORSIA signatory country since 2019, and AZAL reports its international flight CO₂ emissions in full compliance with ICAO’s Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) requirements. Our annual CORSIA Emissions Report includes verified CO₂ data, calculation of offset obligations, and submission to the designated authorities—ensuring full transparency and alignment with global aviation climate standards.

By signing the CO2 Connect agreement with IATA (2025), AZAL strengthens its commitment to transparent, data-driven climate action. This collaboration enables us to share accurate CO2 emissions data and support more informed, sustainable travel choices in line with our decarbonization goals.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) Environmental Achievement Awards IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA)Make a positive impact on the environment in compliance with international standards

Heydar Aliyev International Airport achieved ACA Level 2 in September 2024 and advanced to ACA Level 3 in October 2025, positioning it among the leading airports in the region in carbon management and emissions reduction.

TrackZero by IATA is a data-driven platform that enables airlines to monitor, report, and analyze their CO₂ emissions in line with CORSIA and other sustainability frameworks. It helps ensure accuracy and compliance by integrating operational flight data with standardized emission factors and reporting methodologies.
