Historical places

Oghuz is famous not only for its forests but also for its culture. For many years, Jews and Muslims lived together here. So you can find synagogues, Albanian churches, museums, and lots of old monuments. These are the first things people think about when they say "Historical Places in Oghuz."

Upper Quarter Synagogue

The Upper Quarter Synagogue is one of the main Jewish places in Oghuz. Records say it was built in 1897 with money from local Jewish people. Like other religious places during Soviet times, this synagogue was closed and was used as a warehouse. It was restored between 2004 and 2006 and reopened. Now it serves as a place of worship and remains one of the historical sites.

History and Ethnography Museum

The museum exhibits archaeological findings, artworks, cold weapons, sculptures and copper work from ancient times to present. Items made of wood, leather and metal like plows, hay forks and irrigation tools show that locals have been engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry since ancient times.

Albanian Church

The Albanian Church dedicated to Saint Elisey, considered a place of worship for the Udi people of Oghuz, is located in the southeast of the district. Built in honor of Saint Elisey, a Christian saint, it served as a place of worship for the local Udi tribes. Today, it preserves traces of the past and is considered one of Oghuz’s symbols.
