Places to visit in Shaki

Located in the northwestern part of Azerbaijan, at the foothills of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, the city of Sheki is one of the oldest and most beautiful corners of the country. Here, history and nature, culture and art, tradition and modernity blend harmoniously. Sheki attracts tourists not only with its architectural and artisanal heritage but also with its natural beauty, clean air, and local cuisine. Below, we present in more detail the most important places to visit in Sheki.

Table of Contents

Sheki Khan's Palace

The Sheki Khan’s Palace was built in 1762 at the end of the 18th century by Huseyn Khan and is considered one of the masterpieces of Azerbaijani architecture. The most remarkable feature of the palace is its shebeke windows, which are assembled without the use of nails or glue. These stained-glass windows consist of thousands of pieces of colored glass and wooden details, casting vibrant light patterns into the interior. The walls and ceilings of the palace are decorated with intricate patterns and murals painted by local artists. Each room served a different purpose, and the palace's surrounding garden and architectural style reflect the power and refined taste of the Sheki Khanate of that time. This monument, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, is the first stop for every visitor to Sheki.

Sheki Khan Mosque Complex

Located in the city center near the Khan’s Palace, the Sheki Khan Mosque Complex dates back to the 17th century. In addition to the mosque building itself, the complex includes a minaret, a madrasa (religious school), and a bathhouse. This place served not only for religious worship but also as a center for scholarly and social gatherings. Renowned scholars of the era taught at the madrasa, the call to prayer was recited from the minaret, and the bathhouse was an essential part of daily life for the city’s residents. The architecture of the complex is simple yet functional, with interior wall decorations reflecting the delicate elements of Islamic architecture. Today, the site is preserved both as a place of worship and a tourist attraction.

Caravanserai

Located on the historic Silk Road, the Caravanserai building was the commercial hub of Sheki in the Middle Ages. Merchants from distant lands would stay here, store their goods, and connect with other traders. The building is two stories high, features a rectangular courtyard, and is built with thick stone walls. The ground floor housed storage rooms and stables, while the upper floor contained rooms for the merchants. Today, the building has retained its historical character and functions as both a hotel and restaurant. Visitors can immerse themselves in a historical atmosphere and enjoy traditional Azerbaijani cuisine. The Caravanserai offers a unique experience for both local and international tourists.

Kish Albanian Church

Located about 5 kilometers from Sheki in the village of Kish, this ancient church is one of the most important monuments reflecting the early Christian heritage of Caucasian Albania. According to historians, it is believed to be one of the first Christian places of worship built in the Caucasus, dating back to the 4th–5th centuries AD. Constructed from stone, the church stands out for its simplicity. Archaeological excavations inside the structure have uncovered burial remains of Christian missionaries and clergy. Sheki halva and souvenirs

One of the most famous and unique edible gifts from Sheki is its halva. Made from sugar, walnuts, cardamom, and thin pastry layers, this dessert has become a culinary symbol of the city. Although traditionally prepared for families and special occasions, it is widely available at various points around the city. Additionally, there are artisan workshops and souvenir shops in Sheki where visitors can purchase handwoven carpets, copper and bronze dishes, wooden carvings, and examples of shebeke art. These items are not just souvenirs, but valuable representations of Azerbaijani culture.

Sheki is more than just a city — it is a living encyclopedia of Azerbaijan’s history, architecture, cuisine, and nature. Every street, every building, and every flavor tells a story. If you wish to explore Azerbaijani culture more closely, relax in nature, and bring home unique gifts, Sheki is the perfect destination. A single visit is enough to make you want to return and plan future trips.
